I cannot believe that January is over already! I feel like I’m still only just getting the hang of normal life again – although some people might contest that assessment. I’m looking forward to more sunshine and longer days, although I don’t doubt we’ve got at least two or three more cold snaps to go before then.
Here’re the last month’s posts to keep you busy whilst you’re huddled up against the cold.
REVIEWS
The Surface Breaks – Louise O’Neill
A dark, angry and brutal retelling of The Little Mermaid, which doesn’t pull its punches.
A low key historical fantasy, looking at the way memories shape a person and considering the value of removing them. Perhaps think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but less existential surrealism, and more LGBT romance.
Crazy Rich Asians – Kevin Kwan
If you loved the film, you’ll love the book. It’s just as outrageous and lush, but with that bit more bite and satire.
The Last Unicorn: The Lost Journey – Peter S. Beagle
A published edition of the rough first draft, this book is probably great if you’ve read the finished work, and extremely interesting. Less so if you’ve never read the full book.

November and December Round-Up
Two more months of posts for you to enjoy.
I have never heard of the Surface Breaks before. I think my grown-up daughter will love this book. She loved Little Mermaid as a child and as an adult now cheers for Ursula! Thank you for adding to my 2019 reading list xxx

She may well enjoy the Surface Breaks then! I always heard that you know you’re an adult when you start agreeing with the parents in Disney movies, and I always think of Ariel going “I’m 16 years old, I’m not a child!” And when I was a kid I was like “yeah, you tell him!” And now I’m like “hell yes you are a child, go to your room” haha!

Thank you! And I hope you enjoy it – it’s very very different from the Little Mermaid we know and love. I thought it was good, but it’s not an easy read.
